Plumbing in Randwick
Randwick is a suburb of small apartment buildings and a very large working population. The housing through here, Kensington and Kingsford is heavily interwar red brick: two or three storeys, six to twelve flats, one or two shared stacks, and original risers. Sydney runs soft water, so scale is rarely what finishes a unit off. Nine times in ten it is a spent sacrificial anode or a dead element, and both are often repairable. In a flat we also check what the building will actually allow before recommending a replacement.
Water is coming through my ceiling. Whose problem is it?
That depends on which pipe failed, and it is worth settling before anyone starts. Pipework serving only the flat above is generally that owner's. The shared stack or a riser through the building is generally the owners corporation's. In a self-managed block there is often nobody on site who knows, so we establish it and put it in writing.
Do you work on heritage and conservation-area homes?
Yes. Randwick and Coogee hold some of Sydney's most sought-after Art Deco and interwar apartments, and Kensington has heritage-listed blocks built for the Raleigh Park tobacco workers.
